Church Stretton (Heart of the Shropshire Hills)

Little Stretton in Church Stretton Shropshire

Church Stretton, nestling in a beautiful wooded valley between the mighty Long Mynd and the surrounding Stretton hills, has been a popular visitor destination since Edwardian times.

Church Stretton itself is a bustling market town which holds regular markets and includes many independent shops to browse and tea shops to enjoy. You'll also find good country pubs serving great food and ale in the surrounding picturesque villages.

A magnet for walkers, in 2008 Church Stretton became the first "Walkers are Welcome" town in the West midlands. It now offers an ever expanding range of outdoor activities as well, making it an ideal base for a family activity break or just exploring this oasis of rural tranquillity.

The Long mynd boasts some of the best thermals in Europe, so is unrivalled for gliding, paragliding, ballooning or flying model aeroplanes or kites.

What better way to enjoy the beauty of the area than go for a walk? Come late summer, the long mynd is a sea of purple and not to be missed. Along with the heather, a variety of other plants flourish here including bilberry (known locally as whinberry).

The hilltops are also home to upland birds such as curlew, red grouse and merlin, and you will never be far from a buzzard circling overhead. Keep your eyes peeled and you will probably see red kites as well.

There are opportunities, too, to go geo-cashing, mountain-biking and horse-riding, or else try your hand at archery, shooting and fishing, besides swimming, tennis, bowls and croquet of golf on the second highest course in England.
